Statement from police:

Around 11pm yesterday Police were alerted to a fire in the ground floor annex of the Auckland Central Police Station.

Emergency services responded and the building was evacuated.

The fire was contained to an office area in the annex of the station, and was brought under control quickly by Fire and Emergency NZ who monitored it throughout the night.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries.

A scene examination is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the fire, however Police are not treating it as suspicious at this stage.

There are no operable Police cells in the station.

The office area in which the fire was located sustained extensive damage and staff will be relocated.

The main station is unaffected and continuing policing business as normal.

A fire that has broken out at Auckland Central Police Station is being treated as suspicious.

The fire which was situated in the police prosecutions area, the damage is yet to be determined and the area has been isolated. says Insp Duncan Hall

A third alarm was transmitted, meaning sixteen fire engines and a number of additional support vehicles attended the blaze which started at 11.30pm Friday night.

Inspector Duncan Hall said the fire may be suspicious although unsure at the stage.

Auckland Area Commander John booth told media that "the police station had been evacuated and adjacent accommodation building had been evacuated as a precaution"

Emergency crews are attending from around the region including Avondale, North Shore and Onehunga.

At one stage smoke could be seen billowing from the building.

Two ambulances were also called to the scene.
