Other sports have managed to harness technology to aid officiating well. Tennis has Hawk-Eye, rugby has the Television Match Official, cricket has a Decision Review System.

And yet, since VAR was widely rolled out in football at the 2018 World Cup, there has been a never ending list of controversies and complaints.

So, why exactly is VAR so much worse in football than in other sports?
