The Current Numbers (2024-2025 Estimates)
According to the most recent provisional data released by the CDC in 2025, there has been an "unprecedented" drop in annual fatalities.

A Year: Approximately 80,391 people died from a drug overdose in the United States during 2024. This is a 26.9% decrease from the roughly 110,000 deaths recorded in 2023.


A Day: This averages out to about 220 people dying every day from a drug overdose.

Historical Comparison: The Peak vs. Now
For the last few years, the U.S. was losing over 100,000 people annually, largely driven by the surge in illicit fentanyl.

Encouraging Progress: The CDC attributes the 2024-2025 decline to several factors, including the widespread distribution of Naloxone (Narcan), expanded access to addiction treatment, and a potential shift in the illegal drug supply.

State Variations: While most of the country saw declines, a few states (like Nevada and South Dakota) still saw slight increases in 2024.

Demographics: Despite the overall drop, overdose remains the leading cause of accidental death for Americans aged 18–44, outpacing car accidents and gun violence.
