Alex Ross has been an industry darling for a long while, known for his iconic paintings of both Marvel and DC Comics legends like Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel (Shazam), Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and too many others to list. But there were few other companies that latched onto Ross' initial fame and success like Wizard magazine did. It seemed like they had an interview or a new cover from him every month, and as a kid I loved it. When this was originally released in 1999 I picked it up and promptly forgot about it in a stack of other useless Wizards and Previews. Flash forward 20 years to me finding this for a buck at a local shop and rediscovering it. At the time it was published it seemed a little underwhelming. Now though, twenty one years later it provides not only an interesting look back at where Ross was in his career and the industry, but an interesting document of the personality and tonal shift in Ross' work and interviews that was taking place. Alex Ross went from a long haired freewheeling artist to the very definition of all work and no play. This is a cool document of the opinionated and outspoken Alex Ross I grew up with and while he's usually a pretty dull interview - unless you get someone like Chip Kidd interviewing him! This book contains a collection of interviews and various pieces written about Alex Ross up to it's publication in 1999 including a walk through of his home and studio, an annotated printing of the original Kingdom Come proposal originally entitled The Heroic Age, various sketches and rare paintings, proposal and design sketches for Earth X, Kingdom Come and Uncle Sam and a host of other stuff including a detailed breakdown of his work on the now legendary Batman: Harley Quinn cover which he breaks down in great detail and we break down his breakdown... okay, well maybe that's too much breaking but you get the idea!
