Health Minister Inaugurates “Marathon Run for Rice,” Promoting Traditional Nutrition for Sustainable Health
Chennai, 8th February 2026: Reinforcing the importance of traditional food practices for modern health, Thiru Ma Subramanian, Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu flagged off the “Marathon 2026 -Run for Rice”, at Besant Nagar Beach, Chennai, a unique awareness run celebrating the nutritional and cultural significance of old rice—rice soaked overnight and consumed the next day in the presence of; Dr. K. Narayanasamy Vice-Chancellor, The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University;Dr. Suganthi Rajakumari Director of Medical Education and Dr. A. Aravind, Dean, Government Stanley Medical College; Dr. Jeswanth, Director, Institute of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant, Government Stanley Medical College.
The Marathan 2026- Run for Rice organised by Institute of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation & Dept. of Regenerative Medicine, Stanley Medical College, Chennai. Historically, old rice formed the staple breakfast of farmers, labourers, and warriors, sustaining them with long-lasting energy even under the scorching sun. Rich in probiotics, easily digestible, and naturally cooling for the body, old rice is now gaining renewed recognition as a powerful, affordable superfood aligned with today’s focus on preventive healthcare and lifestyle wellness.
The marathon witnessed around 1000 enthusiastic participations from runners, fitness enthusiasts, nutritionists, students, and members of the public, all united by the message of “Run for Health, Run for Tradition.” The event aimed to revive awareness about indigenous food wisdom while promoting physical fitness and community well-being.
Organisers stated that the Marathon Run for Rice is part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable nutrition, food heritage, and active living, especially among the younger generation. The event concluded with an interactive session on the health benefits of old rice, traditional diets, and balanced lifestyles.
