Jaishankar held his first face-to-face meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio since Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50% and imposed a $100,000 fee on H-1B visas. Both sides called the meeting “positive,” but the backdrop is fraught: a collapsed trade deal, India’s discounted oil from Russia, and U.S. election politics. For Indian families, H-1Bs are lifelines; for American workers, tariffs are campaign promises. Without a compromise, semiconductor, defence and renewable-energy projects could stall. Monday’s talks were less a breakthrough than an attempt to halt the slide — and to show markets and allies that the world’s two biggest democracies are still talking.
