Which is the the better movie?
In this episode we will be comparing both modernized 21st century adaptations of H.G. Wells classic story, Hollow Man (directed by Paul Verhoeven), and The Invisible Man 2020 (written and directed by Leigh Whannell). Both films deal with an antagonist whose found a way to make himself invisible so he can torment women, but the similarities end there. While Hollow Man primarily follows the story of its titular male antagonist, showcasing his rapid descent into madness from being stuck in his invisible state, The Invisible Man 2020 follows the story of the woman whose being victimized, depicting her own descent into hysteria through her ex-boyfriend's gaslighting, while trying to convince the people around her that she's not crazy.
While there have been a handful of adaptations over the better part of the last century, of all the versions of The Invisible Man, these two are the most recent. Hollow Man (Starring Elizabeth Shue and Kevin Bacon) was one of the most expensive horror movies to make in its time, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and received a straight-to-video sequel in 2006. The Invisible Man (Produced by Blumhouse studios and Starring Elisabeth Moss) became one of the most critically and financially successful horror films of 2020. It has already gotten a sequel greenlit, and due to its success, Blumhouse will be modernizing more horror movies based on the Universal Legacy Monsters, including Dracula, The Wolfman, and The Invisible Woman, which may or may not be a spinoff of this movie.
With both Invisible Man remakes carrying on a lasting legacy, which one did you vote for as the best?
