-I think I have symptoms of Covid-19. What should I do?
Let's review the symptoms of Covid-19. They include:
Fever
Cough
Shortness of breath
Difficulty breathing
Chills
Sore/achy muscles
Headache
Sore throat
Losing sense or smell/taste
Suddenly feeling very tired
If you have any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
On April 21, 2020 the Health Department issued a statement that meatpacking workers are at a higher risk of Covid-19 and that doctors should be testing them. We encourage you to advocate for yourself and don't wait if you think you need testing. When you call the clinic, make sure they know that you work in meatpacking or someone in your house works in meatpacking.
2. Is Charles Drew Health Center open?
Yes, Charles Drew is open but are only seeing patients who really need to see a doctor. You always need to call before going to the clinic to make sure you are allowed to come. Call: 402-451-3553. Young children under 2 are allowed to come for check-ups but older children need to wait for check-ups until the situation is better. You should come alone to your appointment if possible. Wear a mask to the clinic.
If you have symptoms of Covid-19 or live with someone who has tested positive and want to ask about testing, call Charles Drew and one of their interpreters can help you. If you work in a meatpacking plant or live with someone who does, make sure to tell them.
If you are at high risk, such as having asthma, diabetes, over 65 or other health issues, they will have you come in right away for testing. You need to also tell the nurse if you live with someone who is high risk. If your symptoms are too serious, they will ask you to go to the emergency room.
3. Is CHI University Clinic still open?
Yes, the University Clinic is still open but as with Charles Drew, you should only go to
important appointments. The clinic is only doing Covid-19 tests at their location for people who work in health care. If you are a CHI patient and have symptoms of Covid-19, call 402-717-2001 or chat with a provider online at this website: https://www.chihealth.com/coronavirus.
4. Is it true that WIC appointments will be over the phone? Will an interpreter be available?
Yes, all WIC appointments are over the phone. If you have an appointment scheduled, WIC will call you with an interpreter. If you need to call to schedule an appointment or do a new application on the phone, tell them you need an interpreter and they will get one. The number for Charles Drew WIC is 402-451-3130. The number for Midtown WIC is 402-444-4082.
5. Does the food bank deliver food to people’s homes?
All food bank sites are drive-through right now. Most of them are not allowed to drop off food at homes. The only one that can drop off is the Intercultural Senior Center for people over 50. If you have someone in your home 50 or older, call 402-444-6529 to ask for food to be delivered.
6. Is DHHS open right now?
Yes, DHHS is still open for food stamps, Medicaid and other applications. However, they are busy and applications may take longer.
7. Will we get extra food stamps for March and April?
Yes, anyone who receives food stamps will receive extra for March and April. The extra March ones should have been added April 11 and the extra April ones should come May 7. The extra amount will increase your monthly total to the maximum amount for your family size. For example, the maximum food stamps for a family of 5 is $768. 8. Can my kids play outside?
Yes, your kids should play outside every day! The sunshine, fresh air and exercise are good for them. Have them put down their phone or tablet and go outside. They should only play with children who live in your house. They should stay in your backyard or close to your apartment. They should not play with their friends or neighbors.
9. Is Covid-19 getting better or worse?
In Douglas County and NE, the number of positive cases are increasing weekly. In NE, we have over 2,000 cases as of April 24, 2020. We have not reached our “peak” yet. This is why it is very important to continue to stay home, wash your hands, only send 1 person to the store, and wear masks in public.

10. How long do we have to stay home? I heard people say things will reopen in May. Is that true?
We don’t know yet. We need to wait and see what the health department and governor decide. The more people follow social distancing rules, the faster the virus will go away, and the faster our community can reopen.
