In this video we are sampling some material she got from the Phoenix Gold Mine in Idaho Springs, CO. She had crushed this material with a sledge hammer and had it in a bucket. We had the gold prospecting machinery to classify and process it quickly to let her know if there is any gold in it. We classified the material with a 1/8" and then a 40# sifters. Classifying is important to optimal gold recovery. We ran the classified material in two separate runs and recovered a small amount of fine gold. There were a few course flakes too.

We only ran about 1/5th of a bucket and it only took about 10 minutes including set up time and about 8 gallons of water (could have used less but our tub was pretty large). The final shot shows the small amount of gold in a vial...the photo does it no justice (I had a heck of a time getting my I-Phone to focus on the clear vial). There was a fair amount. But, do I think it is worth going after? Well, I would say so...since it did come from a place where they actively hard rock mine for gold.

My quick guess on the numbers. I would say there was maybe a half gram of gold (total guess). That would mean there would be about 2.5 grams per 5-gallon bucket. Since there are about 40 buckets in a yard, there would be about 100 grams of gold in a yard. There are approx 28 grams in an ounce, you would be looking at around 3.5 ounces of gold....pretty impressive. Although I am not sure the cost to recover hard rock gold versus placer gold, I am not sure if these are payable quantities...any comments on that?
