How Powerful is Godzilla's Roar? How Far Can You Hear Godzilla?
The sound of an animal's roar or call is measured in a unit called Decibel. In oceans, the blue whale, the largest animal on earth, can produce loud whistling calls that reach up to 188 dB. These calls can travel up to 500 miles underwater. But the loudest is the sperm whale. It makes a series of clicking noises that can reach as high as 230 dB making it the loudest animal in the world. Lions can roar up to 110 dB. Their roar can travel for 5 miles. They do so to establish their territory and scare away rival males. They are also thought to roar sometimes to communicate within a pride. A pride of lions can have a huge territory of up to 160 square miles so roaring helps maintain this territory without having to cover the whole distance.
According to the official source on the Internet, Godzilla is only able to make a sound of 174 dB, and he can be heard from 3 miles away or nearly 5 kilometers. Sounds weak or rather lazily estimated by Legendary pictures. If a lion with levels of magnitudes lower can be heard for 5 miles or 8 kilometers away, then why is a 400-foot-tall titan, rather a superspecies could only be heard from 5 kilometers? That’s unacceptable and we, Mindq will bring to you the actual audible range of Godzilla’s roar, and for that we will have to dive into a little bit of acoustic science.
