After many decades, Nasa is now still relying on the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuits for its operations.
These suits have become iconic, serving astronauts for over 40 years. Designed and launched during the Space Shuttle program in the 1980s, the EMU has been an integral part of Nasa's space missions, from maintaining the International Space Station (ISS) to conducting scientific and technological research beyond Earth's orbit.

However, 40 years is a significant period, and the EMU has shown its age and obsolescence compared to modern technology. Nasa realized that to continue its journey of space exploration, it needed a technological leap forward—newer, more modern space suits that fit the current era.
In 2022, in an effort to innovate, Nasa selected Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace as partners to develop and supply new EVA suits. With a total contract value of 3.5 billion dollars, Collins secured a portion worth 97.2 million dollars. The goal was clear: developing space suits that astronauts can wear while working outside the International Space Station and, within the next decade, on the surface of the Moon.
