"The Unique Matter" is a duo made of two friends from Russia, Alexander Kanavin and Yuri Kotenev. They grew up in a small provincial town with a military background, known as Torzhok. It was here that they first met and shared a passion for music.
For the first two years they experimented to their heart's desire; subsequently they would start to collaborate with various digital labels.
Their first release was far from anything commercial, being a 2006 deep-tech track for Sologroove.com
After this came roughly 5 releases in the styles of deep-progressive house and deep techno; they all appeared on various European net-labels.
Among those tracks, the most outstanding were:
1. "Looking for Sounds." A melancholy deep-house number that got lots of positive feedback from all kinds of DJs and music fans. The track stayed at the top of Beatport's charts for two weeks. This was the composition that first got people in Russia and Europe listening to The Unique Matter.
2. "Deep Space Signal." A deep-house track that also got loads of good reviews. Anton Kubikov included it in his "Sonic Affairs" CD compilation. This, along with other numbers like "New Vision," "Special Feelings," and "Escaping Dream" all reached high positions at Beatport.
The most recent release, also having success among fans of techno-house, was the group's Metasphera EP; it was published on Sologroove.com in March 2009.
Currently Kanavin and Kotenev are working on a change of direction: atmospheric, intelligent minimal music, together with some deep techno. They continue to polish the sound quality of all they do. At the same time, these two guys are finishing their university education. Yuri works as an engineer in the field of freezing systems; Alexander is starting work as an economist with a major airline.
