Squatting in pregnancy is great. For you research nerds there’s plenty on this topic. For those who value common sense, you will like this. Squatting in a nice, deep, relaxed/supported squat is helpful to prepare you to do exactly that during birth. If you are not going to be birthing at any point it’s still great for your hips, pelvic floor, calves, glutes, etc. ⁣

Why is it so great for birth? Well first of all, gravity. It’s going to help the baby descend and come out, which, if you’ve ever been in labor, you know is a GOOD THING. It opens up the hips, lengthens the glutes and pelvic floor muscles, shortens the birth canal, and maximizes the pelvic outlet. Convinced yet? ⁣

There are lots of great ways to do this. You can hold onto something sturdy that will not move, like a bedpost or a bed frame. Many birth centers and hospitals have bolsters, birthing stools, squat bars, or fabric hanging from the ceiling that you can use to assist yourself. ⁣

Personally, when I was laboring, I squatted at varying depths with my back against a wall and just leaned into the wall. I placed a lacrosse ball between my low back/glutes and the wall and leaned into it for some massage. When I transitioned I got into the water and squatted in the corner of a tub and birthed my son that way.⁣

Want the benefits of a squat but worried about the pain of a natural birth? Ask your provider about a “light epidural”. I’ve heard of this being used to numb pain but also allow movement for many Moms. Scheduling that epidural? It’s STILL beneficial to practice squatting like this throughout pregnancy. What’s the best option for delivering? Whatever is best for YOU. (And also NOT with Dr. Mike catching your baby.)⁣
