Yelagiri hills

Yelagiri is a hill region in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. Located in between the towns of Vaniyambadi and Jolarpettai, this is one of the best hill stations near Bangalore, and among the famous places to visit in Tamilnadu.

Yelagiri is a cluster of 14 hamlets that lie between four mountains spread over an area of 30 sq km having an altitude of 3500 ft. This is one of the least explored places near Chennai. The main town of Yelagiri Hills is Athanavur, which comprises a winding road through the hills with isolated villages. The Whole of Yelagiri was once the private property of the Yelagiri Zamindar Family. It was taken over by the government of India during the Early 1950s. The house of the Yelagiri Zamindars still exists in Reddiyur.

Yelagiri is also one of the famous places for trekkers. The highest point in Yelagiri is the Swamimalai Hill, standing tall at 4,338 ft with spectacular views. The hill provides a good number of trekking trails through thick reserved forests as part of Yelagiri Hills tour packages. There are other trekking options that include smaller peaks like Javadi Hills and Palamathi Hills. The Punganur Lake is a manmade lake and one of the popular attractions of the region. Paragliding is another sport that's drawing visitors. The Velavan Temple, Jalagamparai Waterfalls and Nature Park are the other prominent places to visit in Yelagiri Hills.

Jalagamparai Falls
The Attaru river flows through Yelagiri and the breaks into a beautiful fall from the mountain rocks.

The fall dries up in the summer season, and is best seen around November and December.
As one sets foot on the trek that leads to the falls, they are gently guided through a serene forest. The journey presents a treasure trove of wonder that is sure to enchant the senses, with stunning vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys, harmonised by the sweet melody of the birds and other creatures of the wild. The path weaves through nature's splendour, winding around each bend to present a new gift for the heart and the soul.

Andiappanur dam

The Andiappanur dam near Tirupattur has received surplus water after five years following heavy rain last week. The water is expected to benefit about 5,025 acres of agricultural lands in the nearby villages.

The level in the dam, which is nearly 20 km from Tirupattur, has reached its full capacity of 112.2 mcft since Monday. The depth of storage of water at the dam is eight metres, according to P. Anbarasu, Assistant Executive Engineer, Upper Palar basin sub-division, Vellore. The dam was established during 2003-2004.

“It was in 2005 that the dam swelled with water to its full capacity. Presently, the dam has received surplus water of 53 cusecs. There are 10 tanks which receive water from the Andiappanur dam. Several villages in the surrounding areas will benefit to a large extent from this water level,” he said. The 10 tanks at Chinnasamuthiram, Madapalli, Tirupattur taluk, Selanthampalli, Konerikuppam, Muthampatti, Kamblikuppam, Rachamangalam, Pasilikuttai and Kanamanthur have a total capacity of 30 mcft. Villages in these areas and at Andiappanur, Kurusilapattu, Vadugammuthampatti, Thathavalli, Marapalli and Tirupattur will benefit from this inflow, he pointed out.“About 5,025 acres of agricultural lands will benefit through the water from the dam. The dam has uncontrolled spill and one sluice gate for irrigation purpose. The areas will have sufficient water supply from the dam for a minimum of three to four months,” Mr. Anbarasu said. Following heavy rains last week, the dam swelled with water flowing from the Andiappanur Odai and Javadhu Hills.

Jawadhu Hills
The Javadhu Hills (also Jawadhi, Jawadhu Hills) are an extension of the Eastern Ghats spread across parts of Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts in the northern part of the state of Tamil Nadu in southeastern India. This range separates Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts.
