Colombia has the highest murder rate of any nation not involved in a civil war. Violence is increasing as drug barons, investing their illicit fortunes in ranching, clash with armed rebel groups. Ironically, Colombia - unlike other South American countries - has a stable economy, although it relies strongly on the market in cocaine.
