Описание к видео Leadership Under Pressure (The University of Alabama): Week 4 Intent Based Leadership

This mini-lecture introduces undergraduate leaders to Mission Command—a leadership philosophy built on clear intent, disciplined initiative, and operational trust. Designed for University of Alabama students, it shows how to move beyond “command and control” to a model in which teams act responsibly even when the leader is unavailable and conditions are uncertain.

In this session, BG (Ret.) James G. Kent (U.S. Army) explains:

Why traditional, centralized leadership becomes a bottleneck under pressure

How Commander’s Intent (Purpose, Key Tasks, End State) gives teams freedom to execute without constant permission

How trust functions as an operational asset (not a soft skill) that determines speed, initiative, and quality of decisions

Why psychological safety is essential for honest reporting, learning, and adaptation in high-stakes environments

You’ll see practical, visual frameworks for:

Shifting from fragile “hub-and-spoke” leadership to antifragile “mesh networks”

Writing clear intent statements that scale across complex teams

Calibrating your leadership style using a Trust/Competence matrix

Designing environments where people take disciplined initiative instead of waiting for orders

This video is part of Week 4 in the “Designing Leadership Under Pressure” module and prepares students for in-class labs where they will:

Analyze real experiences of clear and unclear leader intent

Practice drafting Commander's Intent for ambiguous, time-sensitive scenarios

Observe and model specific trust-building behaviors in team settings

By the end of this mini-lecture, you will be able to:

Explain Mission Command in plain, civilian leadership language

Describe the three parts of a clear intent statement and why each matters

Connect trust, speed, and psychological safety in real-world teams

Perfect for:

Undergraduate leadership and management students

ROTC cadets and student-athletes

Emerging leaders in student organizations, startups, and project teams
