Hakan Ayik, once Australia’s most wanted man and a key figure in global organised crime, is now behind bars in Türkiye after a dramatic fall from power. Estimated to have trafficked over $1.5 billion in drugs annually, Ayik led a vast international network linked to biker gangs like the Comancheros and groups such as the Alameddine family.
He unknowingly helped orchestrate his own downfall through Operation Trojan Shield, a global FBI-led sting involving a police-bugged messaging app called AN0M. Ayik was instrumental in promoting the encrypted devices among criminals, even profiting from their sales. More than 12,000 devices were distributed worldwide, exposing over 2,000 suspects across dozens of countries.
Ayik, known online as the “Facebook Gangster,” flaunted his wealth and muscular image on social media, helping investigators trace his movements, assets, and associates. He lived in luxury while on the run, owning the Kings Cross Hotel in Istanbul and secretly holding shares in a five-star Aegean beach resort. Turkish authorities arrested him in 2023 in an upscale gated community, identifying him by a dragon tattoo on his shoulder.
Since his arrest, Turkish officials have seized a vast portfolio of Ayik's assets, including AU$3.4 million worth of exotic cars now repurposed as police vehicles. He also allegedly laundered millions through tourism businesses, gyms, and cryptocurrencies. His company, Apex World Tourism Investments, was a front for money laundering, with ties possibly extending to Malta, Panama, and the Netherlands.
Ayik is now in Türkiye’s notorious F-type high-security prison, facing charges that carry a sentence of up to 262 years. His health has reportedly declined due to complications from past steroid abuse, including diabetes and high cholesterol.
Several family members and close associates — including his partner, cousin “Little Hux,” and Comanchero allies — have also been arrested. Authorities say his arrest has significantly disrupted drug supply chains in Australia, likely affecting street-level pricing and availability.
Despite the downfall, many of Ayik’s illicit assets remain hidden, and the full scope of his empire is still being uncovered. Ironically, his influence, greed, and online bravado were the very tools that helped bring down one of the world’s most elusive drug kingpins.
