This West Butte Trail was one of the most memorable highlights during my Alaskan vacation.

It’s a real simple hike. A 1.5 mile one-way path taking you about 800 feet up in elevation. The last half of the trail does goes up a staircase with a bunch of switchbacks. This is the difficult section, but well worth it in the end.

Upon arriving at the summit…the 360 degree overlook was EPIC! Being rewarded for the views would be an understatement, lol. I was so impressed with the scenery in all different directions….I had chills, lol.

But overall, this West Butte Trail actually goes down as one of my Top 5 hikes of all time!! That means everything especially since I’ve visited 55 National Parks in the USA.

Some of the sights from high above include Knik Glacier in the distance, the Talkeetna Mountains and the Palmer valley below.

Also very interesting was there being no wind. It was so peaceful and calm at the top. Usually at an observation view, it can be windy and unsettling yet here I had plenty of time sit down and just appreciate the wonderful setting.

Finally, I visited in early afternoon over the summertime in June and had the sun at my back which made for ideal photo and video taking. I’d highly recommend hiking the trail during afternoon.

Btw, it was $5 parking fee and the trailhead is right in front of you. And…simply plug “West Butte Trail” into Google Maps and you’ll be guided there easily!

West Butte Trail was simply wondrous and awe inspiring. It’s simply located 44 miles northeast of Anchorage…feasible for everyone. It’s in my opinion….a must see and do!
