Tax Assessment is where the income tax department examines the return filed by the Assessee.

Types of Assessment are Self Assessment, Summary Assessment, Scrutiny Assessment, Best Judgment Assessment, Reassessment/ Income Escaping Assessment, Assessment in case of Search.

Scrutiny Assessment is done by tax officer to ensure that the Assessee has neither understated any income or overstated any expense or underpaid any taxes. The Assessee is asked to provide books of accounts and other evidence to validate the income and expenditure stated in the return of income, within the time stipulated by the income tax department.
