The Iguaza is distributed from the south of Texas and Mexico to the north of Argentina, Paraguay and the southeast of Brazil, although errant individuals have also been reported in the Cayman Islands, Chile, Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. In Colombia it is found in the lowlands of the north to the Valle del Cauca and the Pacific coast. In the Eastern Cordillera up to 2600 m above sea level from the south of Boyacá to the Sabana de Bogotá and in the east of the Andes to the south of the department of Meta and Vaupés.

It inhabits swamps and freshwater lagoons with forest cover on its banks. It also uses flooded fields, crops and brackish water bodies.

Temporarily it is very variable between locations. In the United States, there has been evidence of reproduction in the month of April, in Colombia in the periods April-August and December-February and between September and October in Venezuela. This species builds its nest in cavities of trees and occasionally on the ground without the use of any type of material, although sometimes it uses dry leaves of grasses to weave a nest in the form of a fee that it puts on shallow waters. It lays 12 to 16 eggs that incubate from 26 to 31 days both the female and the male.

It is a gregarious bird that forms small groups. It stays active in the day and night and is characterized by perching and sleeping on branches of tall trees. It feeds mainly grazing, behavior to which some morphological adaptations of the peak have been attributed in comparison with species of the same genus that feed on water. Its behavior of courtship is similar to that of a Swan which includes basic deployments such as elongation of the neck, dives and crouching of the head. The northern populations migrate to Central America where they spend the winter, while the remaining populations are sedentary but perform local movements.

La Iguaza se distribuye desde el sur de Texas y México hasta el norte de Argentina, Paraguay y el suroriente de Brasil, aunque también se han reportado individuos errantes en las Islas Caimán, Chile, Bahamas y las Islas Vírgenes. En Colombia se encuentra en tierras bajas del norte hasta el Valle del Cauca y la costa Pacífica. En la cordillera Oriental hasta 2600 m de altura sobre el nivel del mar desde el sur de Boyacá hasta la Sabana de Bogotá y en el oriente de los Andes hasta el sur del departamento del Meta y el Vaupés.

Habita en pantanos y lagunas de agua dulce con covertura árborea en sus márgenes. También utiliza campos inundados, cultivos y cuerpos de agua salobres.

Temporalmente es muy variable entre localidades. En Estados Unidos se ha registrado evidencias de reproducción en el mes de abril, en Colombia en los periodos abril-agosto y diciembre-febrero y entre septiembre y octubre en Venezuela. Esta especie construye su nido en cavidades de árboles y ocasionalmente sobre el suelo sin la utilización de ningún tipo de material, aunque algunas veces utiliza hojas secas de gramíneasen para tejer un nido en forma de tasa que pone sobre aguas poco profundas. Pone de 12 a 16 huevos que incuban de 26 a 31 días tanto la hembra como el macho.

Es un ave gregaria que forma grupos pequeños. Se mantiene activa en el día y la noche y se caracteriza por posarse y dormir en ramas de árboles altos. Se alimenta principalmente pastando, conducta a la que se le han atribuido algunas adaptaciones morfológicos del pico en comparación cons especies del mismo género que se alimentan en el agua. Su comportamiento de cortejo es similar al de un Cisne el cual incluye despliegues básicos como: elongaciónes del cuello, zambullidas y agachadas de la cabeza. Las poblaciones del norte migran hacia Centro América en donde pasan el invierno, mientras que las poblaciones restantes son sedentarias pero realizan movimientos locales.
