Reports are emerging from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan of children suffering serious side effects, including death, allegedly after consuming government-supplied cough syrup. In Chindwara, Madhya Pradesh, six children have died from what is reported as acute kidney failure, while a death has also been reported in Rajasthan. The medicines under scrutiny in Madhya Pradesh are named as Cold Rift and Nextro DSU. Authorities suspect potential DEG contamination as a cause. The health authorities have halted the supply of the suspect batch and issued an alert to stop its distribution. As one speaker in the report noted, "The probe is underway, the batch is on hold, and concerns are rising over a potential public health crisis." A team from the National Centre for Disease Control is investigating and collecting samples. The incidents have also brought past cases of deaths linked to Indian-made cough syrups in Gambia and Jammu and Kashmir back into focus.
