If you spot a crack early—when the clay is still soft or leather hard—it might not be showing up on both sides of the piece yet. At this point, the key is to squeeze and bond the clay back together at the crack’s base. Gently opening the surface just enough to get to the crack lets moisture and pressure get to the weak spot. Since hairline cracks often hide how deep they are, just smoothing the surface won’t cut it. The clay needs to be worked so the two sides are pushed back together. If the clay around the crack keeps drying unevenly, the crack will keep getting bigger inside, even if the surface looks fixed.

Wider cracks that you can see on the surface usually mean the crack’s root has grown bigger inside the clay. To fix this, you’ll need to open the crack a bit so you can work some fresh clay into it. Adding soft clay or slip helps reconnect the two sides, but you need to go deep enough to reach the crack’s root. Since cracks often look shallow from one side but are much deeper inside, repairs that only fill the surface are likely to fail later, especially when you fire it. After you fill the crack, it’s super important to compress the area. Compression makes the clay stronger by aligning the particles and reducing the chance that the crack will reopen as it dries. Just like with early cracks, it’s also important to dry the clay carefully to keep uneven shrinkage from pulling the repair apart.
