Matthew Dean was born and raised in Medina, Ohio, a town outside Cleveland and Akron. He studied classics and philosophy at Suffolk University and the liberal arts at St. John's College in Annapolis. For several years he taught English as a foreign language in Qingdao, China and Latin in the Washington, D.C. area. He is now translating the essays of Teng Biao, a Chinese human rights lawyer. He publish articles and interviews for David Ownby's website "Reading the China Dream":
