Pacers are awesome. They are basically Leyland national bus on rails. They were built in the early 1980s, this one was modernized in the 2000s.


British Rail first designs of Railbuses were in the 50s. In the 70s British Rail wanted a new design of Railbus which would be economical and speed up journey times on the small Diesel routes around the country. The new Railbuses were designed by Leyland and based on the Leyland national bus. Firstly some prototypes were built in the late 70s. Some these are now on heritage railways and condemned to only going 25 mph. In 1980 the Pacer prototype 140 was built (also now located at a heritage railway). Then in the early 80s the original 141 Pacers were built, these original Pacers didn't last very long, but the later 142 - 144 Pacers have been very reliable and are still in service today. Some of the 142 Pacers are still un-modernized with their original bus seats. The Pacer in this video is the 143 Welsh/Cornish Pacer (which has sadly been modernized, but is still awesome).


This video is on the Dawlish coast line to Cornwall, which is one of the best bits of railway in England. Pacers are by far the most fun train around here. Normally I just stay on the HST 125 along this route, but that is so boring, it is far more fun to get off and take the Pacer. It is a shame that they don't run the Pacers all the way to Penzance.


The other trains that run this route are HST 125s (so boring), Sprinters (looks that same as the dull 31Xs trains in London, although makes the same sound as the Pacer), Diesel-Electric hybrid tilting Voyager (these are OK), and the Adelante (which has now disappeared without me going on it, grrr).
