J.Scott Campbell's Black Widow Beauty Shamed | The Appeal of Stylistic Expression vs Bland Realism

Описание к видео J.Scott Campbell's Black Widow Beauty Shamed | The Appeal of Stylistic Expression vs Bland Realism

In this video we discuss the difference between stylized comic book art and realism – using J.Scott Campbell’s art work as an example.

Oftentimes comic book artists are criticized for the lack of realism in their work, when the truth is, the art form is for the most part a stylized genre.

Characters are pushed to their limits, exaggerated, accentuated in physique, movement, proportions and shape to create a captivating visual impact on the page. This is what makes a comic book illustration look appealing.

J.Scott Campbell’s art very much embodies these attributes, and because of it his work cops a lot of flak from hateful critics who unfortunately don’t seem to make a distinction between comics and real-life.

Throughout the video this difference is highlighted as we contrast and compare J.Scott Campbell’s art with real world photos, fine art and even more exaggerated cartoons – hitting home the point that realism does not always equal appeal.

I hope that you enjoy this video – let me know what your thoughts are on this topic in the comments below.
