President Barack Obama has presented the man he has picked as the next head of US homeland security.

If confirmed by the Senate, Jeh Johnson will succeed Janet Napolitano at the helm of the huge agency in charge of securing the nation's borders.

The former top lawyer at the Pentagon, now a partner in a law firm, didn't hesitate to accept the nomination.

"When I received the call, I could not refuse it." Johnson told reporters at the White House. "I am a New Yorker and I was present in Manhattan on 9/11, which happens to be my birthday, when that bright and beautiful day was - a day something like this - was shattered by the largest terrorist attack on our homeland in history."
