► In this detailed tutorial, we explore the three primary projections used in abdominal radiography, each serving a unique purpose in diagnostic imaging. Abdominal films, or x-rays, are crucial in evaluating various conditions within the abdomen, and understanding the different projections can greatly enhance diagnostic accuracy.

The video begins by discussing the upright projection, where the patient stands or sits upright. This projection is particularly useful because air is gravity-dependent, allowing for the easy identification of free air within the abdomen, which may indicate a perforation in the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, the upright film helps visualize air-fluid levels, which can suggest bowel obstruction or other fluid-related abnormalities.

Next, the video explains the left lateral decubitus projection, which is often used when patients are unable to stand or sit upright. In this position, the patient lies on their left side, allowing free air to rise and accumulate adjacent to the liver. This projection is especially helpful in detecting small amounts of free air that might not be visible in an upright film.
