Two men have been killed by black bear in the Ozarks in the last two months, so we headed into a few known hotspots with Bear Hunter Magazine and Bluff Line Media. We camped near the area where Erskine was killed by a bear in the 1840s, a story recorded by Frederick Gerstäcker, and quickly confirmed from trail cams that bears still move through here constantly. We set out to understand the danger, the history, and the deep cultural connection the Osage people had with the black bear. This trip is part hunt, part exploration, and part reminder that the Ozarks are still truly wild.
