Regardless of 1D or 2D, you’ll see a pretty standard fluctuation in price based on whether the barcode scanner supports 1D or 2D barcodes and how it connects to the system.

How does a barcode scanner connect to the pos system or computer? Common barcode scanners: USB barcode scanners, wireless barcode scanners (like a wireless keyboard or mouse), and Bluetooth barcode scanners.

What are common prices for barcode scanners? A lot depends on how the scanner connects to the PC. The prices I’m about to share are in reference to USB devices that I've come across. You'll add about $50 for wireless and around $100 for Bluetooth capable barcode scanners.

1D scanners start around $20 to $40 for off-brand scanners with low support and warranty, whereas a quality barcode scanner will typically have a 3-5yr warranty and sell in the $100-$150 range. 2D image scanners are typically found in the $150-$300 range and carry a solid 3-5 year warranty.

What are the barcode types and how are they used? The main types of barcode scanners are 1D and 2D.

1D scanners are used for the normal barcodes we’re all familiar with. These have only lines and maybe some numbers underneath. 1D barcodes are commonly used for basic shipping and in delis and retail environments. ex: UPC, EAN, Code 39, Code 128, etc.

2D image scanners, stacked, composite barcodes store way more information and can be scanned in any direction or angle. 2D or two-dimensional barcode readers can read damaged or worn barcodes easier than a 1D scanner. 2D scanners can read barcodes on printed media or screens like smartphones, tablets, etc. I think the best thing about 2D scanners is that they can read 1D and 2D barcodes. ex: QR Codes, drivers licenses, and postal barcodes.
