(18 Aug 1970) RR7033A DIPLOMATIC KIDNAPPING: ALLEGATIONS OF TORTURE IN BRAZIL

The recent murder in Montevideo of Daniel Mitrione,
an American adviser to the Uruguayan police, was
just the latest in a series of bitter clashes between the
authorities and the guerrilla revolutionaries in Latin
America. Earlier in 1970, Count Von Spreti, West
German ambassador to Guatemala, lost his life in
similar circumstances. In Brazil, nearly 60 political
prisoners have been released in the last twelve
months in return for kidnapped diplomats. What
drives the guerrillas to these desperate measures?
One answer, apparently, is the harsh treatment they
allegedly received whilst in prison. In Uruguay, for
example, an all-party Senate committee has reported
that torture in the state's prisons is "normal, habitual
and frequent". In Brazil, the situation is the same - if
the guerrillas themselves are to be believed. We've
been talking to some of the 40 Brazilians who were
released to Algeria earlier this year in return for the
kidnapped West German ambassador Herr von
Holleben.
