Описание к видео Mara Kardas-Nelson: The Truth About Microfinance | Culture @ VPL | September 11, 2024

On September 11, 2024, the Vancouver Public Library hosted a conversation between Mara Kardas-Nelson and Philip Owira, about Mara's book We Are Not Able to Live in the Sky.

-- Description from event listing below --

Has microfinance lived up to its promise of lifting millions of people out of poverty worldwide?

In her new book, We Are Not Able to Live in the Sky, Mara Kardas Nelson explores the promises and perils of microfinance, and shows the problems with this approach to international development. Through the eyes of international lenders and women borrowers in West Africa, this absorbing book exposes the flaws in microfinance, and shows that it can entrench inequality, instead of helping solve poverty.

Mara will be in conversation with journalist Philip Owira.
