How the Map Was Created
UCL EI analyzed AIS data containing ship location and speed, cross-referencing it with vessel registries to obtain technical characteristics such as engine type and hull dimensions. Using the methodology outlined in the Third IMO Greenhouse Gas Study 2014, they computed CO₂ emissions for each observed hour.
Kiln then visualized the resulting dataset using WebGL, rendered over a custom base map featuring bathymetry (ocean depth) from the GEBCO_2014 Grid, along with continents and major rivers from Natural Earth.
