STORYLINE
A Liberian flagged tanker has docked near the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk to load the rebels' first shipment of oil for export in nearly three weeks.
The tanker, which arrived on Tuesday, can carry 1 (m) million barrels of oil, less than the 1.6 (m) million barrels Libya produced every day on average before the crisis.
A delivery from the oil port of Marsa el-Hariga would bring in significant funds for rebels seeking weapons and other supplies in their fight against leader Moammar Gadhafi's forces.
The tanker - the Equator - was chartered by Geneva-based oil trader Vitol SA and will head for China once loaded, according to a senior official at the rebel-controlled Arabian Gulf Oil Co., or Agoco, in Tobruk.
Analysts viewed the delivery as a symbolic step forward for a country that had been 17th among the world's oil producers.
The conflict in Libya caused crude exports from the country, which owns Africa's largest proven reserves, to dwindle to a trickle, sparking a surge in global oil prices.
There was earlier speculation the shipment would be taken to Qatar for marketing - possibly to Italy and France.
Qatar last week offered to market oil from the port, while the CEO of energy company Eni has visited the rebels' de facto capital, Benghazi, with the aim of resuming oil ties.
