Just beyond the bends of the Moorabool River in Geelong lies a forgotten landmark; a small bluestone building standing silent beside the Hamilton Highway in Fyansford.

This is what remains of the Fyansford School... once a lifeline for a tiny riverside community.

The story begins on 1 July 1867, when a modest timber classroom opened its doors as School Number 913.

It was basic, cold, and built from what the locals could manage.

Less than ten years later, that wooden school was replaced by the bluestone you see today — a stronger, more permanent mark of progress.

Reopened on 1 January 1876 as Fyansford Primary School Number 1691, it would stand for more than 120 years, before finally closing on 31 December 1996.

Generations of children passed through these walls — some even rowing across the river from Claremont Homestead, the old Baum family farm out near Waurn Ponds, just to make it to class.

Today, the laughter is gone… but the building endures.
Its weathered stone holds the whispers of lessons long finished — and the echoes of a community that time has nearly erased.

This is the forgotten school of Fyansford — a relic of education, endurance, and quiet survival.
