Pre-colonial African literature African literature, in general, can be divided into three basic categories: Pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial literature. Pre-colonial African literature covers the time between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries and includes the Atlantic slave trade. Before the colonization of Africa, the continent had a long history of literature. Communities in the Africa's ancient civilizations such as Egyptians, Nubians, Ethiopians, and West Africans Empires had narrated stories to their generations. Most of the literature of this period was oral in nature. It was unwritten literature, which was passed down from generation to generation through memory and word of mouth. Till today's time the African generations are told stories by the elders. For instances Amhara people of Ethiopia, Hausa community of Nigeria, Zulu people of South Africa and Massai communities of Kenya have ways of narrating the stories to their generations to enrich them with cultures, values and morals.
