The Elegie in C for organ, written in March 1918, was the final work that Hubert Parry completed. As with Alexander Mackenzie's Postlude (in memoriam), composed in honour of staff and students from the Royal Academy of Music who fell in the war, Parry's Elegie was probably intended as a memorial for his former pupils and colleagues (Parry served as Director of the Royal College of Music from 1895 until his death in autumn 1918).

Although the Elegie is complete so far as the notes are concerned, dynamic markings are sparse and there is no indication of tempo at the start (the organ works that Parry saw through to publication all have metronome markings). Choosing a tempo for the piece is tricky, since the musical materials (which suggest a march-like idiom) seem to be at odds with the work's title. While it would be feasible to play the work quite a bit faster (say, crotchet equals 84 or even 96), I've adopted a much slower tempo, similar to the one Parry indicated for his other organ Elegy (in A Flat, composed in 1913).
