Why India Has Joined the Small Nuclear Reactor Race

India is stepping into the global small nuclear reactor race, focusing on Small Modular Reactors, or SMRs, as part of its vision for a Viksit Bharat. The government plans to deploy at least five SMRs by 2033, contributing to the goal of 100 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2047.

The Department of Atomic Energy is developing Bharat Small Modular Reactors, compact 220-megawatt electric Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors designed for industries like steel, aluminum, and metals. SMRs provide faster construction, lower costs, and flexible deployment compared to traditional reactors. The 2025-26 Union Budget allocated ₹20,000 crore for research, development, and deployment of SMRs, alongside legal reforms to attract private investment and international collaboration. India is currently operating 22 nuclear reactors producing 6.78 gigawatts. SMRs will help meet rising energy demand and help India’s strategic position in the global nuclear and defense landscape.
