It was the first screen performance of the H. G. Wells classic of the same name. Produced by George Pal and directed by Byron Haskin from a screenplay by Barré Lyndon, it is the first of four adaptations of Wells's work, and is considered one of the great science fiction films of the 1950s. It won a Oscar for his special effects, which, at that time, were revolutionary.
