MAKING AN ILLEGAL U-TURN

Under NRS 484B.403, Nevada drivers risk getting cited for an improper U-turn by either:

1. Ignoring a "no U-turn" sign;
2. Making a U-turn on a curve or hill with poor visibility; or
3. Making a U-turn in a business district or school zone (with some exceptions)

Like most traffic offenses, making an unlawful U-turn is a misdemeanor. The judge typically imposes a fine in the low hundreds. The DMV adds three demerit points to the defendant’s driver’s license. And as a moving violation, making an illegal U-turn could cause the driver’s insurance rates to increase.

In many cases, prosecutors are willing to reduce an illegal U-turn charge to a non-moving violation. There would still be a fine, but there’d be no demerit points, and it should not affect car insurance premiums. Or if the defense attorney can show prosecutors that there’s insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the driver made the unlawful U-turn, the case could be dropped completely.
