When audiences walked into Se7en in 1995, they expected a dark detective thriller — but few could have predicted the level of psychological trauma that awaited them in the film's final moments. A Bold Narrative Choice
Directed by David Fincher and written by Andrew Kevin Walker, Se7en follows detectives Mills (Brad Pitt) and Somerset (Morgan Freeman) as they hunt a serial killer named John Doe (Kevin Spacey), who is methodically murdering people according to the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy, and wrath.

By the end of the film, five murders have already taken place. John Doe then shockingly turns himself in, blood-soaked and eerily calm. But this surrender is not the end — it’s part of his grand design.

He offers to lead the detectives to the location of the final two bodies. As they arrive in a barren, sun-scorched desert, a mysterious delivery van approaches. Inside the package is a devastating revelation: the severed head of Mills’ wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow) — whom Doe has murdered, representing the sin of envy (his own envy of Mills’ life). He taunts Mills, pushing him toward committing the final sin — wrath.

In that moment, Mills is faced with a harrowing decision: execute Doe and complete the killer’s twisted plan, or walk away and deny him the satisfaction. Overwhelmed by grief and rage, Mills pulls the trigger.
