This was the first walk of our week staying in Lynton, Devon. We have always loved coast path walking and this day out was no exception. We started by getting a taxi from our apartment in Lynton to Coombe Martin. This was not cheap at £35 and the only downside of this area for walkers was the lack of a good public transport service.
One of the great things about walking along any coast path is that the navigation is so easy! In this case it was a matter of keeping the land on our right and the sea on our left and following a well marked path.
The walk from Coombe Martin to Lynton was around 13 miles and as a result was obviously challenging as there are many ups and downs, but it was well worth it. This section of the South West Coast Path even includes the highest point on the whole path, which is the summit of the magnificently named, Great Hangman at 318 metres. This was early on in our walk, so from the very start we had a significant climb.
The views all along the route were fabulous. We stopped for a lunch break at around 8 miles, just after passing Heddon’s Mouth. There a plenty of benches around here to rest your legs and enjoy the views while you enjoy your packed lunch, knowing you’ve done over half the distance.
Lynton is a fantastic place for walkers to visit. Not only do you have easy access to the South West Coast Path, but the Coleridge Way and the Two Moors Way are other long distance trails that can be accessed from here. Exmoor National Park is a walker’s heaven. For a week’s self catering, we stayed at, and would highly recommend -
