This video is dedicated to Madam Eriko Nakamura Barthes, a Japanese journalist et writer who lives in Paris, France with her French husband, Charles Edouard Barthes, a descendent of Roland Barthes, and three lovely talented children. The children are brought up as "French" but they are bilingual - French and Japanese, two of the most beautiful, sophisticated languages. The children are all born in Paris where they live near the French side of their grandparents.
Roland Barthes (12 Nov 1915 - 26 March 1980) was born in the town of Cherbourg in Normandy. His father, naval officer Louis Barthes, was killed in a battle during WW I in the North Sea before Barthes's first birthday. His mother, Henriette Barthes, and his aunt and grandmother raised him in the village of Urt and the city of Bayonne. When Barthes was eleven, his family moved to Paris, though his attachment to his provincial roots would remain strong throughout his life. Roland was academically talented with a very high IQ; he became a French literary theorist, essayist, philosopher, critic, and semiotician. His ideas explored a diverse range of fields and he influenced the development of many schools of theory, including structuralism, semiotics, social theory, design theory, anthropology, and post-structuralism. He was particularly famous for developing and extending the field of semiotics through the analysis of a variety of sign systems, mainly derived from Western popular culture. Charles is his descendant.
Charles, Eriko, and their children often spent time in Normandy, away from Paris. They also have a house in Japan.
Eriko was born in Tokyo to a traditional Japanese family; her father who passed on was a descendant of Ginza Jujiya Co., Ltd. Ginza is the most expensive part of Tokyo, and Eriko's family has Ginza's long-established musical instrument store + company, "Jujiya." The factory started in the 17th century. Her mother, Chieko, took over the company after her husband's death, and acted as the president; today, Chieko runs it as chairman.
Eriko joined Fuji Television in April 1991 after graduating from Rikkyo University with her B.A. degree in Economics. She joined Fuji TV as a TV announcer but left the company in March 1999 to marry Charles. In Sept 2000, Eriko and Charles Edouard Barthes (b. March 11, 1971) got married in Paris, surrounded by both their parents, relatives, friends, etc. Eriko became a mother of three children shortly afterward.
At the time of her marriage, her husband Charles was the general manager of his family company that owns brands such as Jean-Louis Cherel, but now selling the brand business and running an investment firm for the family wealth. He also runs a well-known cosmetics brand in France/ Europe/Japan/Asia.
They met in Tokyo when Charles was working at his family company's Tokyo branch. One day, he saw Eriko in an elevator at the Fuji TV building; this was their first encounter. When Eriko was transferred to work in Paris, they met again "accidentally" but Charles was checking up on her for a while, wishing to get to know her. After their second encounter, he asked her out and the rest is history. They were both brought up in similar family backgrounds, having lots of things in common such as family values, etc. Their children look French/European rather than Eurasian or Asian.
At any rate, best wishes to the Barthes family!
