This week in “Paul refuses to let go of Destiny 2’s bad transmog model,” we have a new rival entering the mix, Outriders, which has just launched its New Horizon update today, which includes a transmog system. Like most games with loot, a common request for Outriders was to have a transmog system so everyone wasn’t stuck with the same few endgame looks. Now, that system is here, and it might be the single best transmog setup I’ve seen this genre, and one that absolutely puts Destiny 2’s microtransaction-based model to shame. In stark contrast to Destiny 2’s transmog model, which offers 10 armor transmogs per season which you must grind your way to earn, and then sells bundles for $10 per armor set after that, here’s the system Outriders has in place:So, I will say up front that no, as cool as it may be for Outriders, I do not think cross-class transmog or gun transmog would work in Destiny, but the part about it being instant and free? Yeah, that’s what I’m focusing on, and in the Outriders presentation they took a clear shot at Destiny’s microtransaction-based system, saying theirs was the total opposite of that. I have been complaining about Destiny 2’s microtransaction transmog system since it launched, and I’ve even been willing to compromise. Outriders is demonstrating the “perfect world” concept here where everything is auto-unlocked for free. But I was even willing to let Destiny 2 A) have a grind for transmog and B) sell a shortcut past that grind. All I am really asking for is a removal of the cap so I can continue to grind out unlocks when there’s nothing to do (like this entire two month stretch we’re in), but they haven’t even done that. While I love my Destiny, Bungie has genuinely come up with the worst transmog model in the genre here, and Outriders doing something like this shines a spotlight directly on it. The actual mechanics of Destiny’s transmog is great, that’s not the issue (and Outriders is lacking in that they don’t have shaders or dyes), but the capped limit and the relentless focus on making it a microtransaction is maddening when we see alternatives like this out there. Given that I seem to be the only one that still cares about this, I don’t know if anything will change. But seriously, take a look at Outriders’ model and tell me that’s not how transmog is supposed to be. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
