[Ep096] Hello everyone, this is TAKE. This time I will make seafood curry.
Curry is one of the three major Western foods in Japan.

Hisotry
1772, Warren Hastings, the first Governor of Bengal, introduced curry to England from India. It was later introduced to Japan through the British Navy. The word “curry” is derived from the North Indian Tamil word “kari" etc. The world's first curry powder was developed by the British company Crosse & Blackwell (C&B), established in 1706. Thanks to the curry powder, curry became popular in Japan and later developed into Japan's national dish!

Curry has since evolved in a uniquely Japanese way, using wheat flour as a roux, and given rise to a variety of curries, such as katsu curry, soup curry, curry udon, curry ramen, spice curry, curry bread etc.

Today Japanese curry powder consumption is the second largest in the world based on some books.

The frequent appearance of curry in Japanese literary works clearly shows that curry was an one of dishes reflecting the big change after the Meiji Restoration in Japan, 1868 from the Samurai era to present Japan.

Japanese curry is also highly regarded overseas. In 2022, it was voted the best food in the world by those registered with Taste Atlas, a British gourmet website, who voted on what they ate on their trips.

[Recipe]
Cut squid into round slices.
Boil squid and shrimp quickly for 3 minutes.
Remove squid and shrimp from the boiling water, as they will become hard if boiled too long.

In a frying pan, saute onion and carrot in butter.
When they begin to brown, add them to the curry pan.
Cut the curry roux into small pieces with a knife and add to the curry pot.

Cut the potatoes into large chunks and microwave for around 3 minutes.
If you add the potatoes from the beginning into a curry pot, they will crumble and thicken the curry, but they will lose their texture, so add them to the curry pot halfway through.

Simmer over low heat for 3-5 minutes.
Add shrimp and squid and simmer over low heat for 3-5 minutes.
