"Losing Our Way in Education"

Born in Manchester, England, David Needham has been a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science at Duke University since 1987. He has developed and co-taught a series of courses that challenge the current pedagogy of "teaching at" students, both at Duke and at other institutions. Rather, these courses and their foundational methodologies use what he has called an EDU-K pedagogy of learning and a Content Framework of Design in order to reverse engineer for example, problems engineers solved, pharmacists solved, and, indeed, problems nature solved. Students are then inspired and more well-equipped to forward engineer solutions to problems that haven't been solved of particular interest to them. In addition to his "EDU-Kational" activities, of significance in the past fifteen years has been the invention, fabrication, and testing, of a new anti-cancer drug delivery system that is now in Human Clinical trials, (Phase III for Liver Cancer, and Phase I/II for Chest Wall Recurrence of breast cancer). In fact, it is his own journey of research and invention that has guided and inspired the comprehensive active-learning methodologies that he now shares with his students. Equipped with such problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, students can now embark on their own journeys of invention, innovation, and new ideas.
