According to Reuters, Beijing fears widespread unrest as public anger grows over alleged negligence by local authorities that may have contributed to the tragedy. Officials have warned that the national security law will be used against any “anti-China” protests. Despite this, large crowds gathered on Sunday to mourn the victims, openly defying the heightened caution. The death toll continues to rise even after four days, now reaching 146 lives lost, with hundreds still missing. Authorities told the media that bodies were found in stairwells and on rooftops, where residents desperately tried to escape the blaze. With the cause of the disaster still unclear, the public is demanding an independent investigation. While street protests in Hong Kong are tightly controlled, online forums remain accessible. After witnessing massive Gen Z–driven protests in Nepal, Beijing is closely monitoring digital activity. Hong Kong’s own youth-led uprisings in 2019–20 still loom large in China’s mind. Officials have warned residents not to use the tragedy to “plunge Hong Kong back into the chaos” of 2019. Police recently detained a 24-year-old man linked to a petition demanding an independent probe, which had gathered over 10,000 signatures before being shut down. As investigations stall and frustrations grow, the situation continues to simmer beneath the surface.
