Famous for its ornate interior, this 200-year-old pub features 1930’s urinals and a serving hatch behind the bar.

Its name stems from its use as an Army recruiting venue with further murals and references throughout and it is one of only three city centre buildings that stood near the site of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819.

During the Napoleonic Wars of 1803-1815 it was a refuge for locals who hid from recruiters in the basement and tunnels below.

Rumours persist that the once classified nuclear war tunnels under the city can be accessed through the cellars, although the underground network built in 1954 – 115ft below the city streets – was only acknowledged in 1968.
