We were relaxing at my brother’s house, enjoying a rare quiet afternoon with my mother, wife, and daughter. The peace ended abruptly with a shriek from the lawn. My ten-year-old niece was shouting at my seven-year-old nephew.
​My brother and I instantly ran outside. "Uncle, he snatched my dinosaur!" my niece yelled, teary-eyed, pointing at the nephew who gripped the toy tightly. He stood his ground, refusing to budge.
​I couldn’t help but smile at the familiar scene. I looked at my brother, expecting him to scold his son, but he just threw his head back and roared with laughter.
​My wife, mother, and daughter were astonished. They stood on the porch, aghast that he wasn't embarrassed by the chaos.
​Mom stepped forward, smiling softly. "Don't look so shocked," she said to my wife. "You two were exactly the same! Samuel is three years older, but they fought over everything just like this."
​The memory hit us both hard. We were those kids. I nudged my brother, who was still laughing. "Well," I commented, watching the two stubborn fighters, "there's no doubt at all they are my blood." We shared a laugh, grateful that some traditions, messy as they are, continue.
