Spatial Patterns of Natural Disasters in Türkiye and Policy Needs for Integrated Multi-Level Disaster Management

How are natural disaster risks distributed across Türkiye, and why does this spatial pattern matter for disaster governance?
In this video, I present key insights from our recent study published in Afet ve Risk Journal. The study analyzes the spatial patterns of four major natural disaster types—earthquakes, wildfires, landslides, and floods—across Türkiye from 1900 to 2025, using data from the Disaster Management and Decision Support System (AYDES).
Using Global Moran’s I and LISA (Local Indicators of Spatial Association) spatial statistics, the study reveals that natural disaster occurrences are not randomly distributed but clustered in specific geographic zones. Findings highlight that:
• Wildfires are concentrated along the Aegean–Mediterranean belt
• Earthquakes align with the Eastern and Western Anatolian fault systems
• Landslides dominate the Northern Anatolian corridor
• Flood risk is elevated in Central and Eastern Anatolian transition zones
The 2023 Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes further underline that disasters should be understood as interconnected multi-hazard systems, not isolated events. The study argues that Türkiye’s current province-centric and reactive disaster management paradigm remains insufficient, and calls instead for data-driven, regionally sensitive, and multi-level governance frameworks.
