PERMACULTURE EXPLAINED- A Tour of Selvista's Permaculture Farm on Ometepe, Nicaragua

Today we embark on a tour of Selvista's permaculture farm, part of "Selvista Guesthouses", on an island called Ometepe, which sits in the middle of a lake in southern Nicaragua.

Megan explains permaculture as it functions on this farm in Central America, and these theories and practices can be applied to any other property in the world where food can be grown. She shares the fruits, trees and herbs that work in this location, and why, and shares ideas about choosing alternative plants to do the same job while maximizing the capability of a local plant due to the nature of the environment it's being grown in.

Megan dives into building practices and structure, exploring what works and what doesn't. While building in the rainy, tropical climate on this farm, they've determined the best methods of building with the least maintenance.

The island is home to two volcanos, Maderas and Conception, Selvista sits at the base of Volcan Maderas on the southeast side of the island. This island is also host to some of Nicargua's richest history, as Ometepe was known as "The Island of the Gods", and thousands of petroglyphs can be found around the island, on the volcanos, and even on the properties of people living down below.
